Coney Island dresses up

Coney Island, August 21, 2010

On Saturday we took a trip to Coney Island. After recovering from the haunted house ride, we went to eat peanuts on the beach. While we were expecting good ol’ Americana kitschy weirdness, we didn’t expect to stumble upon hundreds of people in tuxes and dresses, playing on the beach. It was one of the most romantic and oddly glamourous things I’ve ever seen. So much joy and fun. And what a gift for my new birthday camera.

Turns out this was the Black Tie Beach, another clever intervention or scene, from Improv Everywhere, the people who brought you Pantless subway rides and Ghostbusters in the New York Public Library.

I love this. It makes me want to put on a prom dress and go to the beach.

    • I know! And we didn’t pack our tux…It was so surreal, hundreds of people so far down the beach, mingling with tourists and families. We thought it would be an awesome thing to do at the Dingle, or somewhere like that, to commemorate the fact that you can swim in the harbour, but then I thought, eewwww.

Yeah, it’s the icky Halifax waters that stop me from wanting to actually do this. Maybe I’d carpool out to a beach with cleaner water.
